Unattended candle causes house fire, $150,000 in damage

ERIN – Volunteer firefighters from the town's stations in Erin and Hillsburgh attended a house fire last weekend on Main Street in the village of Erin. Smoke came from the sides of an evacuated single-storey home as fire crews arrived after 2:25pm on May 18.

Lakehurst resident dead after single-vehicle crash

GUELPH/ERAMOSA – A 32-year-old resident of Lakehurst died in a single-vehicle crash here early on Sunday morning. Wellington County OPP officials say emergency crews responded to the scene on 4th Line, north of Highway 7, on May 19 at about 3:30am.

Volunteers play key role at 50-year-old Ponsonby ballpark

PONSONBY – When Ponsonby Minor Softball formed its first teams in the 1960s, they didn’t have a ballpark of their own, but this year the club will celebrate five decades of playing ball on its own “Field of Dreams,” a place still looked after by community volunteers the way it was 50 years ago.

Motorcyclist airlifted to hospital after crash

CENTRE WELLINGTON – The operator of a motor cycle was transported to hospital after a serious crash here on Thursday. Wellington County OPP officials say emergency crews were called to the scene, on Wellington Road 21 west of Elora, on May 16 at about 8pm. 

Survivor of intimate partner violence lobbies for change

FERGUS – Three years ago Cait Alexander was beaten and left for dead by her boyfriend.  Now she’s on a mission to change legislation around victims’ rights as opposed to the accused’s right to a speedy trial, and to have Ontario recognize intimate partner violence as an epidemic.
