Police launch ‘Stop. Look. Live’ intersection safety campaign
LONDON – The OPP’s West Region is running a “Stop. Look. Live.” safety campaign this week in response to concerns about fatal and serious collisions at intersections across the region.
“Intersection-related collisions continue to have devastating consequences for individuals, families and communities,” states a June 15 OPP press release.
From June 15 to 21, OPP officers “will focus on both enforcement and public education,” police say, targeting adherence to stop signs, failure to yield the right of way and inattentive driving.
Though it has been planned for some time, the campaign was launched just three days following a June 12 crash at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12 in Mapleton Township that claimed the lives of five children.
Last Friday’s crash was the third involving five deaths within the last 13 months in the OPP’s West Region.
In May of 2025, four teens and one adult died in a crash near London and in March a crash in Norfolk County claimed the lives of two teens and three adults.
“In both 2024 and 2025, 13 lives were lost each year as a result of failure-to-yield and intersection-related incidents,” states the OPP release.
“These are not just numbers – they represent people whose lives were cut short and families who continue to live with unimaginable loss.”
Staff Sergeant Julie McLeod, of the West Region traffic and marine units, stated, “Every intersection presents a critical decision point for drivers. Taking an extra moment to stop and look can save lives.”
Police are reminding drivers that safe driving starts with “simple, consistent actions”:
– come to a complete and deliberate stop at every stop sign;
– look in all directions, more than once, before proceeding;
– never assume other drivers will stop or yield; and
– be mindful of pedestrians, cyclists and approaching vehicles.
“Choosing to slow down and take that extra moment is an act of care-for yourself, your passengers, and every other road user and the OPP encourages all road users to make safe and responsible decisions,” states the OPP release.
