Aquatics cancelled at Fergus sportsplex during roof repairs
Centre Wellington pool closed Sept. 5 to 25
FERGUS – The aquatic centre in the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex will be closed by the township from Sept. 5 to 25 for roof repairs and pool maintenance.
Recreation facilities manager Matt Tucker said moisture and humidity has escaped into the roof, causing damage.
“That’s one of the problems with all pools,” Tucker said of the moisture.
Tucker said air pressure in the pool area lifted a protective membrane allowing mositure-filled air to spill into the roof, Tucker said.
A consultant found moisture in 81 per cent of the roof area, according to Tucker. The roof is being redone, and a vapour barrier designed to keep humidity within the building will be replaced.
During the three-week shutdown, the leisure pool will be drained of 53,000 litres of water – enough to fill 265 bathtubs – so main drain grates can be replaced and tile repair and regrouting can be done. Repairs to the main pool filter are also planned.
Contractors will handle the roof and filtration work. Township staff will clean change rooms, the pool deck and repaint some areas.
There was previously a shutdown in 2025 and during COVID-19 years.
“The pool has been here for close to 20 years, I think we are going to start to see probably two-week shutdowns every year,” Tucker said.
The closures will allow for preventative maintenance to avoid emergency downtime, he said.
All aquatic programs are cancelled during this month’s closure, including aquafit, swimming lessons, lane swims, leisure pool swims, whirlpool and pool rentals. Regular programming will resume following the work.
