Police beat:Aggravated assault

ARTHUR – A local man has been charged with aggravated assault after an incident here last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say someone was assaulted at an apartment complex on Edward Street in Arthur on Jan. 15.

“The victim sustained life-altering injuries after an altercation with another resident from a neighbouring apartment,” police stated in a press release.

Paul Roger Thomas Toth, 37, of Arthur, was charged with aggravated assault and remanded in custody.

Palmerston man faces numerous charges

WROXETER – A Palmerston man faces drug, flight from police, and impaired and dangerous driving charges after police tried to pull a vehicle over here for an alleged driving violation.

A Huron County OPP officer conducting patrols in on Church Street in Wroxeter at about 10:15am on Jan. 10 initiated a traffic stop on a minivan.

“The driver of the Dodge Caravan failed to stop for police and sped away at a high rate of speed,” police stated in a press release.

“The driver then turned around and drove directly at the police officer who was parked with the emergency lights activated. The officer had to take evasive action to avoid being hit by the minivan driver.”

Police say additional officers helped locate the vehicle and apprehend the driver a short time later.

Andrew Doupe, 35, of Palmerston, was charged with driving while impaired by alcohol and drugs, flight from a peace officer, dangerous driving, possession of Schedule 1 substance (methamphetamine), failing to comply with a probation order and driving while suspended.

The vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days and the accused is to appear in Goderich court on Feb. 27.

Vehicle stolen

CENTRE WELLINGTON – On Jan. 17 at about 6am, Wellington County OPP responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Wellington Road 7.

Police say officers located the vehicle and determined it had been stolen.

Edward Francis Turcotte, 50, of Kitchener, was charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. 

He is scheduled to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Business break-in

MOUNT FOREST – On Jan. 16, Wellington County OPP responded to a report of a break-in at a business on Main Street North here sometime between 1 and 8am that morning. 

Police say someone gained entry by damaging the front door and stole approximately $60 in cash and a cheque book.

Residential break-in

PUSLINCH – On Jan. 18, at about 3:30am, the Wellington County OPP responded to a report of a break-in at a residence on Townline Road here.

No one was home at the time, but the homeowner contacted police after receiving a notice from their alarm company.

Investigation revealed that several pieces of jewelry, watches, banking cards and a cheque book were stolen. The total value of the stolen items was estimated at $30,000.

Driving, speeding charges

WELLINGTON NORTH – On Jan. 14 at about 10:30am, a Wellington County OPP n officer stopped a passenger vehicle after it was observed speeding along Maas Park Road here.

A 39-year-old driver from Brampton was charged with driving while suspended, speeding and driving without insurance. 

Over 20 charges laid, 11 vehicles taken off road 

ARTHUR – On Jan. 19, the OPP West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement team, along with the Wellington County OPP and the Ministry of Transportation, conducted a commercial motor vehicle inspection initiative in Arthur.   

Overall, 30 inspections were completed, 22 charges were laid, and 11 commercial motor vehicles were taken out of service due to major defects.
