Police beat: No seatbelts

FERGUS – A 31-year-old from Fergus is facing 15 charges after being pulled over last week on St. David Street North.

On Aug. 12 at around 3:45pm, an automatic license plate recognition system alerted a Wellington County OPP officer to an uninsured Nissan Pathfinder, according to an OPP news release.

After the driver was pulled over, the officer found there were 11 people inside the SUV, including eight children not wearing seatbelts.

The driver was charged with: careless driving, driving with a child passenger not properly secured, five counts of driving with a passenger under 16 without a seat belt, two counts of driving with a passenger under 16 not occupying a position with a seatbelt, not having insurance, giving a false insurance card, failing to surrender an insurance card, failing to notify of a change in address, failing to surrender vehicle ownership and driving without a validated permit.

The accused is set to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

The OPP is reminding motorists and passengers that seatbelts are a simple and effective way to prevent serious injury and save lives. 

Break and enter suspect on the loose

GUELPH/ERAMOSA  – Wellington County OPP responded to a break and enter at a gravel pit on Wellington Road 30 on Aug. 14 at around 7:15am and are now asking for help to identify suspects.

“It is reported that during the overnight hours of Aug. 13 to 14, the suspect(s) attended the property, broke into several trailers on-site and stole several thousand dollars worth of tools and copper cable,” a news release stated.

“The suspect(s) then proceeded to steal a white GMC pick-up truck and left the property at approximately 4:45am. 

“The suspect(s) may have initially attended the property on bicycles.”

On Aug. 14 at around 10am, police recovered the truck on Wellington Road 51 in Guelph/Eramosa, but said the stolen property is still missing.

Booze thief found

CENTRE WELLINGTON   – A Fergus man has been arrested and charged in connection with multiple thefts from the Fergus LCBO.

On Aug. 7, at around 5pm, Wellington County OPP got a call about someone stealing items from the Fergus LCBO on four occasions this month and last.

On Aug. 12 at around 5pm, police identified and arrested a 32-year-old Fergus man and charged him with four counts of theft under $5,000.

He was released and is to appear in court in November.
