Police beat: Cyclist hit by car

GUELPH – A Guelph driver has been charged after a cyclist was hit by a car here last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say emergency crews responded to the intersection of Hanlon Expressway North and Stone Road West on June 30 at about 12:30pm.

Police say a cyclist struck by a sedan was “transported to a local hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

“The driver of the sedan did not sustain any injuries.”

A 29-year-old from Guelph was charged with making an unsafe turn.

Partner violence

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police continue to lay intimate partner violence charges across the county.

Those arrested include:

- a 26-year-old from Welington North, who was charged with spousal assault and assault with a weapon in relation to an incident in Wellington North on June 29; and

- a 30-year-old from Minto, who was charged with spousal assault and domestic mischief in relation to an incident in Minto on June 29. 

The accused individuals are to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Didn’t pull over

PUSLINCH – A Cambridge driver is facing three charges after failing to pull over for an emergency vehicle.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers stopped a vehicle on Wellington Road 32 on June 29 at about 6:30pm.

A 35-year-old from Cambridge was charged with failing to stop for an emergency vehicle, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.

The accused is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Seatbelt violations

CENTRE WELLINGTON – Four people were charged with seatbelt infractions following a recent traffic stop  here.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers were monitoring traffic on Church Street in Elora on June 28 at about 5:15pm.

They stopped a vehicle and charged a 36-year-old occupant from Mississauga with driving with a passenger under 16 not properly wearing a seatbelt.

Three more occupants from Mississauga, aged 22, 27 and 22, were charged with failing to properly wear a seatbelt.

Holiday week charges

ORILLIA – The OPP laid more than 19,000 traffic and marine charges during targetted enforcement last week, including on Canada Day.

In a July 6 news release, police say charges included:

- 8,603 speeding charges;

- 1,454 seatbelt charges;

- 412 impaired driving charges;

- 311 stunt driving charges;

- 243 distracted driving charges;

- 49 helmet charges; and

- 11 marine safety equipment charges.

Safety campaign

LONDON – The OPP laid more than 350 charges during its “Stop. Look. Live.” campaign June 15 to 21.

Police say West Region officers laid 354 charges and issued 126 warnings during the campaign, with most offences for failing to stop at stop signs or red/yellow lights and for failing to yield the right-of-way.

Collision data recorded during the campaign included:

- 46 intersection-related collisions;

- one fatality;

- 15 collisions resulting in injuries; and

- 30 property damage collisions.

“Each of these incidents reflects the significant and often irreversible consequences that can result from a momentary lapse in judgment behind the wheel,” OPP officials stated.
