Local woman joined by three others in second hair cut for cancer campaign

For a while now, customers at the TD Canada Trust have been asking Chrissie White when she is going to cut her hair again.

The longtime employee at the Fergus bank chopped off 17 inches of hair four years ago for Angel Hair for Kids and raised thousands of dollars for the Children’s Health Foundation in London.

White was blown away by the response of the community and in two weeks she hopes to repeat the success of that campaign.

Only this time, she won’t be alone. She has enlisted the help of Kathy Bouma, Adam Richards and niece Haley White.

Richards, who last had his hair cut short about eight years ago, said he originally decided to grow it long so he could donate it to charity.

So it was an easy decision to take part when he was approached recently by White.

“It’s in honour of all people that are fighting cancer,” White said, adding, “It’s something that’s affected pretty much everyone.”

Bouma said she read a Newspaper article about White’s campaign four years ago and was inspired to do something similar.

“Why not change?” Bouma said, adding she hasn’t had really short hair since she was a child.

Haley White was six years old when her aunt first decided to cut her hair for cancer. Now 10, she explained she has only had her hair cut once – and is excited to take part in the fundraiser.

“It’s been on my mind for quite some time,” said Haley.

White said there seems to be a lot of interest in the idea, which benefits everyone.

“Except me, because I don’t like short hair, but that’s okay,” she said with a laugh.

The four Fergus residents will receive their special hair cuts on Dec. 9 at 11:30am at the TD Canada Trust at the corner of St. Andrew and Tower Streets.

The bank will match any monthly donations received and will issue tax receipts. To make a donation or for more information, call 519-843-2670.
