Centre Wellington’s first mayoral debate slated for Sept. 23
Affordable housing advocacy group hosting Elora debate
ELORA – The first mayoral debate in Centre Wellington has been announced.
The local, affordable housing advocacy group Rural Engagement and Advocacy for Community Housing (REACH) Wellington is hosting the debate, slated for Sept. 23, 6 to 9pm, at the Jefferson Elora Community Centre.
Doors open at 6 and the debate gets underway at 6:30pm.
The debate will focus on the housing crisis in rural Centre Wellington as well as other social justice issues like food insecurity and mental health.
“We are looking at how our municipality can improve and put preventative measures in place,” said REACH Wellington director Melanie Fegan in an email.
Other social justice groups, like Elora House and Food Uniting Neighbours (FUN), have also been invited to join, Fegan said, and will have information and handouts for those who attend.
The event will be moderated and there will be opportunity for questions from the audience. Light refreshments will be available.
Vying for the mayor’s chair in the election are current Mayor Shawn Watters, past Mayor Kelly Linton, current councillor Bronwynne Wilton, and past councillors Neil Dunsmore and Stephen Kitras.
“We hope to see an incredible turn out to this event,” Fegan said.
