Horticultural group hears about earth box

“If I lived closer you would have a new member.”

So said a visitor to the October meeting of the Guelph Township Horticultural Society.

It was a fun night, with  flower and photo entries by youth and adult members, a game show, a demonstration and of course, food.

Jean Gordon conducted Garden Jeopardy – loosely based on the TV show. All answers were related to gardening or OHA activities.  Jane McDonald, Helen Synnott, and Sylvia Grant were the bell ringing contestants. Other members acted as scorekeepers. The audience participated by singing the Jeopardy theme song.

During intermission, Bob

Smith, a member of Fergus Horticultural Society, demonstrated the earth box.

The original is available in Florida, where folk can bring their own seeds, or have the garden centre there do all the work. Smith  has developed his own version of the box and uses recycled materials, where possible, to make a portable garden. His photos of the overflowing plants show that it is a great way to garden for those with small spaces or patios for their garden. Lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and all kinds of flowers grow in abundance in the self-watering containers.

President Phil Sweet reminded all of the Nov. 15 pot luck supper beginning at 6:30pm. Members are to bring either first or second course along with dishes and cutlery.

Year end reports are to be handed in to the secretary. Election of officers for 2012 also takes place. Entertainment will be a demonstration by Grace Evans, a Zehrs’s floral designer on Decking the Halls for Christmas.

It is also the night to pick up prize money for the year.
