Centre Wellington council puts pause on AI data centres
Staff to report back to council after studying issue
ELORA – Centre Wellington will put a pause on proposals for AI data centres pending a report from staff.
Councillor Bronwynne Wilton put forth the motion on Aug. 24 and it was unanimously approved by council.
“There is cause to exercise caution,” Wilton said.
She listed energy/water use and noise/light pollution impacts, as well as how the data centres fit in the township’s official plan, as items she’d like staff to research and report back to council.
Councillor Lisa MacDonald said she has received a petition opposing AI data centres with 1,700 signatures.
Earlier in the meeting Centre Wellington resident Courtney Pamela delegated on the topic, asking council not to allow the centres in the township.
“Municipalities are feeling these pressures, without guidance from the province or federal government,” said councillor Jennifer Adams.
“A lot of communities are dealing with this,” agreed Mayor Shawn Watters. “Our understanding will help us make good decisions.”
Wilton put a cap on the cost of the township inquiry at $49,999.
To a question from council, managing director of planning Brett Salmon said a proponent could potentially appeal the township’s decision to the Ontario Land Tribunal.
There currently is no official proposal for a data centre, though there has been speculation that one is planned for Fergus on property at Gartshore and Gordon streets.
