Harriston man pleads guilty to hunting charges

A Harriston man has been fined $2,000 for careless hunting after a bullet nearly struck a home here earlier this year.

On June 1 Curtis McDonald pleaded guilty and was fined $1,500 for careless hunting and $500 for trespassing to hunt.

He was also suspended from hunting for one year and must complete an education course before obtaining a hunting licence in the future.

On March 10, a Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officer responded to a complaint of careless hunting in the Arthur area.

Upon investigating, the officer determined that McDonald was hunting when he twice fired a “high-powered rifle” at a coyote on private property, states an MNRF press release.

“The shots were in the direction of a family home, and one of the shots struck a tree immediately adjacent to the home,” states the release.

Justice of the Peace Walter Rojek heard the case in Guelph court on June 1.

The ministry is reminding the public that firearms laws are in place for the protection and safety of hunters and members of the public. To report a natural resources violation, call the MNRF tips line at 1-877-847-7667 or contact a local ministry office during regular business hours or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
