Winter military lectures series begins Feb.12 at Wellington County Museum

The Wellington County Museum and Archives will host three lectures this winter.

The first continues the museum’s fall military series with a presentation on Feb.12 at 7pm in Aboyne Hall.

Historian and author Terry Copp will present D-Day Dodgers: The Canadians in Sicily.

“As we approach the 70th anniversary of the landings in Sicily, Operation Husky, we will examine the Canadian role in the liberation of the island at the beginning of the Italian Campaign,” said the author.

Copp is the director of the Laurier Centre for Military Strategic and Disarmament Studies and Wilfrid Laurier Professor Emeritus. He is the author or co-author of 10 books and numerous articles on Canadian military history.

“We are very pleased to have Terry return this winter with a new lecture.” said Libby Walker, activity programmer at the Wellington County Museum and Archives. “It is clear that there is a great interest in Canadian military  history in the county and we are happy to provide this kind of quality presentation  to the public.”

The second lecture will present part one of a two-part series highlighting the museum’s travelling exhibit, “The Noble Experiment: Temperance and Prohibition.”

The exhibit highlights the issues and conflict in the province surrounding changing attitudes towards alcohol in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

The following lectures will provide some local context to this still compelling topic.

On Feb. 24 at 2pm, Karen VanderBrink, manager of Heritage Services for the City of Waterloo, will present the lecture Tales from the Barrel Warehouse: The Story of the Seagram’s. Part two of this series will take place on March 3 at 2pm when the Older Voices historical drama group will present a mock debate titled Strong Spirits vs. Temperate Tea.

Admission for all three lectures is by donation, no registration is required.

The Wellington County Museum and Archives is located on Wellington Road 18, between Fergus and Elora.
