Township okays closure, sale of road allowance beneath lake

Guelph-Eramosa Township will be selling a portion of an old road allowance beneath Guelph Lake to the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA).

A bylaw passed by council on July 3 states the township will declare surplus a portion of the Jones Baseline allowance – close to 700 metres in length and located immediately north of Wellington Road 124 – and convey it to the GRCA.

The move, which clerk Meaghen Reid called a “housekeeping item,” is subject to the township and GRCA agreeing on a purchase price, as well as to any other easements or legal requirements deemed necessary by the township’s lawyer.

The existing Jones Baseline actually curves around the lake  north of 124, but the old road allowance is underneath the lake and lines up with the portion of Jones Baseline located south of 124.

“Staff have reviewed the lands and is of the opinion that the closure and sale of the [old Jones Baseline road allowance]  would not restrict access to and from another person’s land, as required by Section 34 (7) of the Municipal Act,” CAO Janice Sheppard said in her July 3 report to council.

Sheppard added that as of last week, no comments were received by the township from abutting landowners.

Council then approved the closure and conveyance of the road allowance. Details of the purchase were not known by press time.
