Police beat: Two face charges after stolen vehicle strikes OPP cruiser

NORTH PERTH – Two people face a number of charges after a police chase last week that included the deployment of a spike belt and a collision with an OPP cruiser.

Wellington County OPP officials say that on Oct. 25 at about 7:30am a Perth County OPP officer saw a pickup truck and trailer on Perth Road 8 .

“The pickup truck had been stolen earlier that morning from a residence in Harriston and the trailer had also been stolen from a business in North Perth,” police stated in an Oct. 27 press release.

“The Wellington County OPP and Perth County OPP attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle failed to stop for police, but a tire deflation device was successfully deployed.”

Police say the suspect vehicle then struck a Wellington County OPP cruiser, with an officer inside, on Perth Road 92.

“The two occupants of the vehicle were subsequently arrested,” police stated. “The officer and the passenger of the vehicle were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.”

Rebecca Lee Ruelens, 29, of Priceville, was charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, assaulting a peace officer, flight from a peace officer, possession of break-in instruments, unlawful possession of a credit card, possession of property obtained by crime (under $5,000), two counts of theft of a motor vehicle and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime (over $5,000).

Jonathan Jason Barger, 28, of Owen Sound, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime (under $5,000), possession of break in instruments, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime (over $5,000).

They are to appear in Guelph court on Dec. 8.

‘Suspicious person’

ROCKWOOD – Police have arrested a local man after Rockwood residents reported seeing someone trying to enter several vehicles here last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say police received the “suspicious person”  call on Oct. 23 at about 5am.

“It was reported that a person was seen attempting to make entry into several vehicles,” police stated in a press release. “Officers attended the area and were able to locate the individual.”

Dalvir Khatkar, 27, of Rockwood, was charged with trespassing at night and is to appear in Guelph court on Dec. 12.

No insurance

FERGUS – On Oct. 17 at about 1:45pm an OPP officer stopped a vehicle on Sideroad 18 here for having a loud exhaust. 

“Further investigation determined that the vehicle was also uninsured,” police stated.

A 53-year-old from Fergus was charged with driving without a valid permit and driving without insurance. The accused is to appear in Guelph court on Feb. 7. 

Suspended driver

FERGUS – On Oct. 17 at about 9:45am an officer received a notification from the automated license plate recognition system about a possible suspended driver on  Black Street here.

A 67-year-old man from Belwood was charged with driving while prohibited. The accused is to appear in Guelph court on Dec. 12.

Truck charges

CENTRE WELLINGTON – On Oct. 19 at about 2:30pm a Wellington County OPP officer stopped a fully loaded tractor trailer that was allegedly speeding in a community safety zone on Wellington Road 21 here.

A 33-year-old from Arthur was charged with speeding in a community safety zone and driving after 16 hours since last break without eight hours off. 

An Arthur business was charged with allowing a driver not to comply with mandatory break rules.

‘Detached’ trailer

WELLINGTON COUNTY – On Oct. 20 at about 7:30am, Wellington County OPP officers responded to a report of a logging trailer that “had become detached and gone into the ditch.” 

Police say no injuries were reported and there was minimal damage to the trailer.

The OPP did not provide specific details about where this incident occurred.

A 45-year-old driver from Hanover was charged with making an unsafe move (lane or shoulder) and failing to surrender a completed daily inspection report.

A Mildmay business was charged with failing to equip a commercial motor vehicle with an electronic logging device  and failing to ensure a daily inspection report is accurately completed.

Driving charges

FERGUS – On Oct. 20 at about 4pm a Wellington County OPP officer stopped a motor vehicle for allegedly running a red light on Gordon Street here.

A 61-year-old from Elora was charged with failing to stop at red light, driving without a valid permit, driving with a defective braking system, driving with an improper muffler and driving without insurance.

The accused is to appear in Guelph court on Feb. 7.

Load not secured

FERGUS – On Oct. 23 at about 10pm, a Wellington County OPP officer stopped a truck and trailer on St. David Street North here.

A 37-year-old from Brampton was charged with driving with an improperly secured load and driving with defective brakes. 

A Brampton business was also charged with failing to display an inspection sticker.
