Police beat: Foot chase foiled

CENTRE WELLINGTON – A Fergus man faces four charges after he led police on a brief chase here recently.

On Aug. 13 at about 3:50am, a Wellington County OPP officer was monitoring traffic and conducting radar on Highway 6 near Sideroad 6.

Police say the officer observed a silver vehicle that appeared to be travelling above the posted speed limit. The vehicle was allegedly clocked on radar at about 155km/h in an 80km/h zone.

“The vehicle continued northbound with speeds fluctuating between 180 and 190km/h as it approached Fergus,” police stated in a press release.

“The driver shut the vehicle lights off and drove erratically thru a plaza parking lot at the south end of town. The vehicle stopped abruptly and the driver fled from the vehicle.

“A brief foot chase ensued prior to the driver being taken into custody.”

Donovan Thomas Fischer, 21, of Fergus, was charged with racing a motor vehicle, having a blood-alcohol level above zero, dangerous driving and flight from police.

He is to appear in Guelph court on Oct. 13. The vehicle and driver’s licence were seized as per statute.
