Police beat: Drayton resident charged in connection with fatal crash

MAPLETON – Police have charged a Drayton resident in connection with a crash last fall that left two people dead.

On Oct. 2 at about 9:30pm, emergency crews responded to a collision between a pickup truck and a farm tractor on 8th Line in Mapleton Township.

“Both the occupants of the pick-up truck, a 32-year-old male and a 39-year-old female from Drayton, were pronounced deceased on scene and the driver of the farm tractor was transported to hospital with minor injuries,” stated in a press release from the Wellington County OPP. 

Police announced on April 27 that a 43-year-old Drayton resident was charged with having improper lights on a farm vehicle.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Assault, threats

FERGUS – A local teenager has been charged with uttering threats and assault with a weapon following an incident in Fergus last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers responded to “an incident on Scotland Street in Fergus involving a youth” on April 23 at about 11:30am.

“No injuries were reported. There is no threat to the public as police believe this was an isolated incident,” police stated in a press release.

A 15-year-old from Fergus was charged with possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, assault with a weapon and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

The accused has been released from police custody and is to appear in Guelph court at a later date. 

Dangerous driving

WELLINGTON NORTH – A Kitchener driver has been charged following several traffic complaints.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers responded to “multiple” complaints about “a dangerous driver” in Wellington North on April 25 at about 11:45pm.

“Members conducted patrols and located the vehicle in a ditch along Highway 6 outside of Arthur,” police stated in a press release.

A 26-year-old Kitchener man was charged with dangerous driving and driving without insurance.

The accused is to appear in Guelph court on July 17.

Partner violence

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police continue to lay intimate partner violence charges across the county.

Those arrested include a 43-year-old from Waterloo, who was charged with dangerous driving and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, in relation to an incident in Guelph-Eramosa on April 24.

The accused individual are to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Plethora of charges

MAPLETON – A Priceville driver is facing nine charges after being pulled over by police here last week.

On April 21 at about 4:15pm, a Wellington County OPP officer was monitoring traffic on Wellington Road 12 in Mapleton.

Police say the cruiser’s automatic license plate recognition system “notified the officer of a vehicle that was potentially being operated by a suspended driver.”

The officer subsequently discovered the vehicle was “in an unsafe condition,” police added.

An 18-year-old from Priceville was charged with eight driving offences, including driving without insurance and muffler, brake and tire violations, in addition to a charge for prohibited entry into a premises.

The accused is to appear in Guelph court on Aug. 5.

Careless driving, no insurance

ERIN – A Hillsburgh driver is facing five charges following a recent traffic stop.

On April 21 at about 11:45am, a Wellington County OPP officer was monitoring traffic on Wellington Road 22 in Erin.

Police say the officer “observed a motorist driving carelessly,” adding, “ The vehicle attempted to pass other traffic and narrowly avoided a collision.”

A 59-year-old from Hillsburgh was charged with careless driving, failing to surrender both a permit and insurance card, driving without insurance and driving without a permit.

The accused is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Driving charges

MAPLETON – A St. Jacobs driver is facing five charges following a traffic stop here last week.

On April 21 at about 2:30pm, a Wellington County OPP officer monitoring traffic on Wellington Road 86 in Mapleton pulled over a vehicle.

A 21-year-old from St. Jacobs was charged with driving an unsafe vehicle, driving without a licence, improper muffler, failing to display two plates and driving with an obscured interior.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Guelph court at a later date.
