Not enough lifejackets

MAPLETON – Police are reminding the public about the importance of marine safety after charging the young driver of a boat with not nearly enough lifejackets on board.

On Aug. 14, the Wellington County OPP Marine Unit was conducting patrols on Conestogo Lake in Mapleton Township.

Police say officers stopped a boat that had 11 people on board, six of whom were under the age of 16.

“However, there were only four personal flotation devices (PFD) … also known as lifejackets, on the vessel,” police stated in a press release.

The 15-year-old boat operator from Milton was charged with operating a pleasure craft without copy of licence on board and operating a non-human powered pleasure craft without flotation device or lifejacket of appropriate size for each person on board.

The operator is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

“[PFDs] save lives. We cannot emphasize this message enough. Not only must there be enough PFDs on a vessel for everyone on board, but you should also have it on, especially childre,” stated acting Wellington County OPP Inspector Steve Thomas.

“Most marine fatalities happen unexpectedly when a small boat capsizes, or someone falls overboard. A PFD left behind is not much use.”
