OPP raised $1,641 for Special Olympics

They ran from the north, the east and the south of the county and when they reached the middle in Fergus, the county OPP had raised over $1,641 for the Special Olympics.

Krista Bajinski coordinated the run this year. She said on June 4 that there were at least ten runners through each of the communities in Wellington County, and in Erin, the officers and volunteers were joined by some Special Olympics athletes for the run through town.

“Thank you to everyone who supported this cause,” Bajinski said in her report. “Because of your contributions, Special Olympics Ontario will be able to continue to provide Sports training and competition for people with an intellectual disability.”

She also thanked M&M Meat Shop, of Fergus, for hosting a barbecue in the parking lot on Tower Street. That event raised $275 and was donated to the Special Olympics.

Bajinski also thanked McPhails, of Harriston, for the trailer that was donated to transport the participants and Special Olympic athletes from town to town for the North end portion of the run, which was organized by Constable Steve Wing. The two groups of runners met in Fergus at about noon.

From July 13 to 17, the 2010 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games will be held in London. Athletes from across the country will be taking part in the competitions for the chance to represent Canada at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games, in Greece.  Bajinski said she is looking forward to a bigger and better Law Enforcement Torch Run in 2011.
