OPP: Poor weather to blame for 18-vehicle crash

Police say blowing snow was likely the cause of a huge accident on March 15 at around 4pm.

Wellington County OPP officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision involving 18 vehicles on Highway 6 just south of Arthur.

Officers attended along with Wellington North Fire Services and Mapleton Township Fire Rescue, as well as the Guelph-Wellington Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Three parties were transported by land ambulance to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  Wellington North Township staff opened the Arthur Community Centre for those involved in the collision to stay warm during the police investigation and Highway 6 was closed for approximately 2.5 hours from Wellington Road 109 to Wellington Road 17.

County OPP officers also investigated numerous other multi-vehicle collisions as the blowing snow and gusting winds created very difficult driving conditions and poor visibility.

Police warn that winter weather is not finished, and it is important for motorists to slow down and drive according to the ever-changing road and weather conditions.

Do not call 911 or the OPP for road reports. Motorists should monitor local News media for weather conditions, and check the Ministry of Transportation website prior to leaving for road conditions at www.mto.on.ca/english/travellers.
