Police beat: Partner violence

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police continue to lay intimate partner violence charges across the county.

Those arrested include a 21-year-old from Cambridge, who was charged with spousal assault, mischief (spousal) and disobeying a court order in relation to an incident in Puslinch on Aug. 1.

The accused is to appear in court at a later date.

Long weekend traffic campaign 

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local OPP officers laid 103 charges during a traffic campaign over the civic holiday long weekend.

From July 31 to Aug. 3, the campaign focused on what police call “negative driving behaviours” that can lead to collisions, deaths, injuries and property damage, including  speeding, failing to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving and impaired driving. 

Charges laid in Wellington County include:

– 90 for speeding;

– 10 for seatbelt violations;

–two for impaired driving; and

– one for distracted driving.

Across the OPP’s West Region, officers stopped 2,107 vehicles and laid 1,815 charges during the campaign:

– 856 for speeding;

– 178 for seatbelt violations;

– 45 for impaired driving;

– 14 for distracted driving; and 

– 11 for failing to move over for an emergency vehicle.

“Fourteen people have died in speed-related collisions in West Region so far this year,” stated acting West Region traffic inspector Tara Bolstad.

 “Speeding remains a leading contributor in crashes, fatalities and injuries across Ontario.
