Mayor leery of providing garbage bags for volunteers

Guelph-Eramosa Township would love to help residents who clean garbage from the ditches of local roads, but liability concerns may stand in the way of any financial assistance.

That was the message Mayor Chris White delivered last week to resident Eric Huber, who inquired about the possibility of township-supplied garbage bags for residents volunteering to clean area roads.

White said there could be liability issues if the township provides the bags and someone gets injured while doing the work.

Though he said it may seem ridiculous, the mayor explained  municipal officials could be asked how they ensured who got the bags, for what they were being used and if the individuals were being safe.

“It’s government gone amok. We’re not going to debate it – I agree with you,” White told Huber.

But, White added, that is the current situation for municipalities.

Councillor Doug Breen said the township should consider giving out bags, even if it loses 20% because people are abusing the service and using the bags for personal garbage.

Councillor David Wolk agreed and suggested the township could issue clear bags to ensure during pick-up that they are used for roadside cleaning.

“All I’m saying is, if we’re going to do it, let’s do it right,” White replied. He suggested the township could receive a legal opinion on the matter before making a decision.

White also noted county roads are not the township’s responsibility and any policy for those roads would have to be discussed with county officials.
