March Break drop-in events for families offered at museum

The Wellington County Museum and Archives is offering a variety of afternoon events and activities for the family from March 11 to 15, from 1pm to 4:30pm.

The drop-in format allows participants to explore different themes concerning folklore and superstition and the history of superstitions in this 13th year of the third millennium.

Humans are superstitious by nature and over time a lengthy list of do’s and don’ts has evolved  concerning everything from weather and gardening to moving into a new house and the importance of “lucky” numbers, notes a press release from the museum.

On March 11, House Lore, Charms and Customs will invite visitors to try tricks to keep their house spirit-free and harmonious.

On March 12, Gardens and Weather Lore will be the focus. The Farmer’s Almanac was onto something – learn the traditional folklore around spring planting and other garden related superstitions.

Lucky Numbers will be covered on March 13. Learn what numbers are special and why and take a turn at bingo and roulette.

Health and Wellness Lore will be the topic on March 14. From the early days of the pioneers there were tricks to keeping healthy and avoiding illness, with a focus on tonics and home-made medicines. Organizers are sure this event will cure the winter blues.

On March 15, Futures and Fortunes will feature presentations on tea reading and tarot cards as well the opportunity to out the Ouija board and the Magic 8 ball.

Each day includes hands-on activities, crafts, games and a scavenger hunt.

Admission is by donation. Activities will be ongoing from 1pm to 4:30pm.

Children must be accompanied by adults at all times.

The museum is located on Wellington County Road 18, between Fergus and Elora.
