Health unit has started its regular mosquito larvicide program

Program aims to reduce mosquito populations suspected of carrying West Nile virus

WELLINGTON COUNTY – The local health unit has begun its regular mosquito larvicide program.

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) announced the start of the program, which will run from June 1 to Oct. 31, in a press release on June 2.

“The Medical Officer of Health has authorized the program to reduce mosquito populations suspected of carrying West Nile virus,” states the release.

“Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks licensed applicators or trained technicians will apply the larvicide by hand, in and around communities in Wellington and Dufferin Counties.”

The larvicide will be applied in mosquito larvae breeding sites, such as:

  • roadside ditches;
  • temporary pools;
  • sewage lagoons;
  • storm-water retention ponds;
  • areas of standing water; and
  • municipal catch basins.
