Harriston arena accessibility enhanced

New accessible doors have been installed at the main entrances to the Harriston-Minto Community Centre with the aid of a $15,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).

The Town of Minto hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on Aug. 10 to mark the addition of accessible doors at the facility’s front entrances to the arena and auditorium.

“This investment by the Government of Ontario to install accessible doors in this well-used facility is great News for many in our community,” said Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece.

‘There are many in the community who will benefit from this and it ensures that the space remains accessible for all.”

The arena is used by a variety of Sports and community organizations for hockey games, figure skating, the annual fall fair, meetings, celebrations and fundraisers.

Town officials state the $15,000 Ontario 150 Community Capital Program grant means people of all abilities will be able to have easier access to the building.

“The great thing about this renovation is that there are no steps to enter the community complex and the new doors are fully accessible,” noted OTF volunteer Wayne White. “We commend the Town of Minto for strengthening the entire community and sending a stellar example for all other communities in Ontario.”

Minto Mayor George Bridge said, “The impact of this Ontario 150 Capital grant cannot be underestimated.

“This grant has allowed needed renovations to be made. Our community centre is more accessible and we can now accommodate patrons with mobility issues and serve our community better.”

Minto Chamber of Commerce president John Cox thanked the town and the Trillium foundation for making the improvements to the facility possible.

“I think it’s great that you’re making this happen … it brings people to town and that’s business, so we’re happy,” said Cox.

The town states in a press release it is committed to preserving the facility and ensuring it remains accessible for community activities.
