Fergus Tennis wrapping up season with special events
FERGUS – The Fergus Tennis Club is wrapping up the summer with two special events: a Rally for Fun Day on Aug. 29 and Girls, Set, Match on Aug. 23.
“The Ontario Tennis Association asked us to host Girls, Set, Match,” said Fergus board member Susanne Thomson.
“The idea is to promote tennis for girls.”
“It’s hard to keep kids interested beyond 12 years old,” added club president Tom McAuslan.
Girls, Set, Match will take place on Aug. 23 from 10am to 2pm. It’s a combination of on-court activities and off-court empowerment.
Girls aged 10 to 16 will play team tennis in a positive, encouraging team tennis style of play.
Off the court activities will support guided discussions and reflections to help participants build confidence and leadership skills.
Participants must play at a minimum 3.0 level of play. There is no charge to participate.
Rally for Fun Day on Aug. 29 runs from 10am to 1pm and is also free and is open to the community.
Kids who attended summer camps and classes are invited, “but we’re also inviting the entire community,” McAuslan said.
The Ontario Tennis Association is bringing its smash gauge, so if you want to know how fast your serve is, this is the day to find out.
A tennis pro who has been working with the club will also be there offering tips in group sessions.
There will be refreshments courtesy of Tim Hortons and club members have gathered up their old tennis balls for some creative crafting.
Thomson said the club had strong registration for its junior programs and summer camps and for its learn to play programming. Rally for Fun Day is a day to celebrate that as well, he said.
