Fergus Lions Club hosts annual effective speaking competition

The Fergus Lions Club held its annual effective speaking contest recently at the Centre Wellington District High School (CWDHS).

Four contestants took part, three at the intermediate English level and one at the senior English level. Each student delivered both a prepared speech and an impromptu speech.

The contest is promoted by the Lions Multiple District “A” in Ontario, which has been doing so for 68 years. It is the largest of its kind in Canada that includes both English and French students.

First place winners from each division proceed to the District A-15 contest.

Laura Bender placed first in the intermediate English division, Avery Moroney placed second and Harrison Garrett placed third. Emma Kelly placed first in the senior English division.

Laura Bender attended the District A-15 Effective Speaking contest held in St. George on March 2 and placed first in the intermediate English level. She is now eligible to proceed to the Multiple District “A” finals to be held in St. Catharines the weekend of May 4.

The Fergus Lions Club extends thanks to Catherine Moorfield, English teacher, for her work at the school level to promote the program and for organizing the contest, as well as judges Paul Lingen and  Ralph Rainford for their contributions.
