Dobbie leads Team Canada to silver medal at lacrosse World Cup

The Canadian women’s field lacrosse team took home the silver medal at the 2017 Women’s Lacrosse World Cup in Guildford, England, July 12 to 22.

Fergus native Dana Dobbie was the captain of Team Canada this year, a position she is happy to hold.

“It’s an incredible honour and one that I don’t take lightly,” she said.

This was Dobbie’s third time competing with Team Canada in the World Cup.

“We had an incredible World Cup this year. All the hard work and dedication paid off,” she said.

“We had a tremendously-skilled and close team which allowed us to play the best Canadian lacrosse this program has seen yet.”

Canada lost 10-5 to the U.S. in the final game on July 22.

“We’re really proud of our performance in the gold medal game. We played a closer and stronger game versus the U.S. than ever before,” said Dobbie.

“(It’s) always disappointing when you don’t win gold, but we made huge strides and there is no doubt in my mind that we’ll see Canada with a gold in the near future.”

Dobbie, along with teammates Erica Evans and Katie Donohow, were named to the FIL All-World Team in recognition of their performances throughout the tournament.

Soon after the completion of the World Cup, Dobbie and the Canadian team, with a shortened roster, headed to Poland for the 2017 World Games.

Canada competed for gold at the international multi-sport event against five other nations: the United States, Australia, Great Britain (a combined England, Scotland and Wales squad), Japan and Poland.

Officials say the Games marked the first time women’s field lacrosse was part of the official program at an international multi-sport games event.

After beating out Australia twice, 15-10 in one game and 14-8 in the semi-finals, and Japan once, with a score of 15-8, Team Canada fell to the United States once again in the final women’s lacrosse game at the World Games in Poland.

On July 30 Canada lost the final game to the Americans 11-8.

The United States took home the gold medal, Canada took home the silver medal and Australia took home the bronze medal.
