Conservation areas open for ice fishing

Pinehurst, Shade’s Mill and Belwood Lake conservation area parks are now open for ice fishing, the Grand River Conservation Authority has announced.

All three have the same operating hours: daily between 8am and 4:30pm. Snowshoeing is currently unavailable (rentals as well) but will open when trail conditions permit.

Anglers there can fish for pumpkinseed, bluegill, and black crappie. There are no ice huts or equipment rentals. Park admission is $4.25 for adults, $2.50 for children 6 to14 and free for children five and under.

Belwood Lake near Fergus is open daily for ice fishing.  Anglers can try for pike, perch, and walleye. Bait is available for purchase and fishing huts are available for rent for full or half days. There is a parking fee of $6 at Belwood and that includes admission to the park.

Shade’s Mills Conservation Area on Avenue Road in Cambridge was open for ice fishing on Jan. 2. Cross-country skiing will open when trail conditions allow.

Anglers will be able to fish for pike and perch. There are no ice huts or fishing equipment rentals. Park admission is $4.25 for adults, $2.50 for children ages 6 to14, and free for children 5 and under.

For skiers, there are four trails from 1.6km to 2.7km long, for skill levels ranging from beginner to expert. When open, the trails will be groomed and track set. Ski rentals are available, but skiers should call 519-621-3697 to reserve equipment on weekdays.
