Centre Wellington wants to know what culture means to you

ELORA – Centre Wellington township wants to know what culture means to its residents and has launched an online community survey at ConnectCW.ca/culture.

The survey is open until Feb. 28.

The last Cultural Action Plan was developed and implemented in 2013, said community development coordinator Paula Sealey in a phone interview.

She noted the information will guide the township as it develops new programs, improves parks, distributes grants and considers the needs of the community.

Culture means different things to different people, Sealey said. It includes sports, theatre, festivals, restaurants, hiking trails, the language you speak and where you are from.

“It’s the way people put meaning in the world,” Sealey said. “It’s how we engage, learn and create together. And it impacts every corner of the community, including wellness, the economy – everything.

“Culture to me might not be what it means to you and that’s good. That’s what we want to know.”

The survey should take five minutes to complete and those who respond will be entered into a draw for: two weekend passes to Riverfest Elora; two tickets to Adrian Sutherland at the Fergus Grand Theatre; or two gift certificates for distillery tours at Elora Distilling Company.

Sealey said the team will go through the data and determine next steps. She sees the survey as the first of a three-phase project, and the results will be shared back to the community.

“We have such a wide range of cultural activities in our community,” Mayor Shawn Watters stated in a press release.

“We want to hear from everyone in Centre Wellington about their ideas and thoughts on culture. This input will help us better understand how we can support the arts, creative, sporting, and social activities that help us build community.”
