Township opts for in-house parking enforcement

ELORA – Centre Wellington Township is moving away from its current parking enforcement provider towards a renewed paid parking program and an in-house parking enforcement service.

“We recognize the frustration that residents, businesses and visitors have experienced as a result of the lack of paid parking and consistent enforcement during this busy tourism season,” officials state in a press release.  

Township staff are actively working on paid parking options that will support an “effective, consistent and well-managed in-house service,” the release states. 

Future decisions related to the paid parking program will be brought to council for consideration.

“Moving from an external service to a township-delivered model requires careful preparation, including establishing procedures, staffing, training, and equipment,” states the release.

Centre Wellington has been using Alpha Technology System Inc. for its parking enforcement since 2021, when it initiated a three-year pilot project.

This year paid parking was to begin in January but was delayed by weather.

It did begin in May but was promptly put on hold a month later after technical difficulties at the kiosks, when people paying to park were redirected to websites with adult content.

Alpha has continued to enforce the three-hour time limits, but paid parking has not begun.

The township press release says further information will be shared as staff finalize the strategy.
