Yake: more info needed before committing to tanker

While Mount Forest Fire Chief Ron MacEachern is looking for council’s commitment to a new tanker truck, Wellington North councillor Dan Yake believes council needs more information before it buys in.

At council on March 1, Yake cited MacEachern’s comments cited in the fire committee report. MacEachern had concerns over new tanker guidelines and did not want to get bids if that meant waiting for a new council after the 2010 municipal election.

Yake said, “I don’t have such a problem giving out a commitment because I think it’s important to support our departments. But I also think we should have some sort of guidelines to go by.”

Yake said council could commit to a new tanker, “but what are we committing to? It could be anything … “I don’t have a problem making the commitment, I just want more information as to what we are committing to.” He said some of that could include the status of the old truck and its history.

“It’s important that we know before we commit. That should be the rule with most things,” Yake said. “Most of this table are prepared to make the commitments to make this community better, but we also need to make sure we are doing it for the right reasons and staying within cost guidelines.”

Mayor Mike Broomhead said there may be some money in reserves for that truck.
