Wellington North appoints new economic development committee members

by Mike Robinson

Councillors here have approved two new members to Wellington North’s economic development committee.

The approval came following a report from Clerk Lori Heinbuch.

She noted the interview committee was comprised of councillor Ross Chaulk, committee member Ron Forrest, and herself.

There were five applicants for two vacancies, but one applicant later withdrew.

Heinbuch said the interviews were conducted taking into account what the EDO committee is looking for in its members at this time.

That included:

– an agricultural background, specifically in farming to support rural revitalization;

– tourism background, knowledge, experience or interest;

– supportive of business expansion and retention initiatives and will participate in the business visitation program;

– representation from the southern portion of the municipality and willing to support downtown revitalization; and

– commitment to attend regular meetings, participate and support events, activities, and promotions.

The committee unanimously recommended John Braby, of Arthur, and Stephen Dineen, of RR4 Kenilworth.

Mayor Mike Broomhead said the reason for the specific search criteria was the committee is replacing two members and needed to retain a balance of interests and representation within the municipality.

Mary Schmidt and John McLean had both represented the south end of the municipality.

Councillor Dan Yake asked for clarification on the qualifications. “Does that mean every time, we’d be looking for something different?”

Broomhead said that on the committee there are certain people looking after certain things because of their expertise.

“One of the shortfalls we’ve found on the committee was that there might not been enough people with an agricultural background.”

However, if there are two or three people on the committee with agricultural backgrounds and none with a business background, the focus would be for that area of expertise … “so we always have a well-rounded committee.”

Councillor Ross Chaulk said, “I think we have two fabulous candidates. All you have to do is wait and see how they do. They both seem to have a strong interest in this.”

Broomhead said the two are replacing those who are retiring from the post, so the number of committee members will not change.
