By the end of election night on Oct. 27, Watters had garnered 1,837 votes to Ballantyne’s 1,523.

Earlier that night Watters said he considered the overall campaign as fairly civil.

“There were a few signs knocked down, but overall I think it was pretty clean and respectful. It’s important.”

Watter estimated he was able to visit 1,500 homes “and I generally had a good reception.”

He said people were appreciative of the visits and being able to discuss the issues affecting them.

“I think there still is definitely confusion as to what the county does versus what the local government does.”

As a result he fielded questions regarding local roads.

He believed the issue was not who is responsible for what “but rather how do we provide the opportunities to ensure those issues are addressed.”

Watters feels more coordination is needed between the levels of government.

“That requires a dialogue with members around the horseshoe.”

He added this is not just a Centre Wellington issue but one throughout the county.

“We all have a mutual responsibility to figure it out.”

Opponent Diane Ballantyne too felt her campaign was a really great experience.

“I learned a lot and enjoyed meeting people in the community.”

Ballantyne said she was inspired by the level of engagement of local people with their community.

“People are concerned with transportation and what could possibly happen for seniors and young people in regards of them having a stable and reliable means to get around town.”

She believed Wellington County was making progress on green issues.

“But I think there needs to be more progressive steps in terms of the environment,” she said.

She believed the creation of an environment committee will be a good move.
