Water Rockers present cheque to council

The Water Rockers from Erin Public School were at Erin council on June 16 to present council with a cheque for $3,100 to put toward the installation of water refilling stations at the arenas in Erin and Hillsburgh.

Maddie Swan, Ava Belrose, Rachel Frure, Kole Wigfield and Spencer Abott presented the cheque to Mayor Allan Alls along with two plaques to be installed beside the stations.

The Grade 6 class has been fundraising this spring and has received cash and online donations totaling $5,625, surpassing its goal of $5,000.

Research conducted

“We also researched about the amount of water it takes to produce all of our everyday things like clothing, food, cars and paper. Most adults don’t realize how much water it takes to manufacture our everyday items,” said the group in a presentation.

“If people realize that then maybe people would shop differently and only buy things that can be reused or recycled. Maybe people would be more aware of how much unnecessary water we use everyday and how much unnecessary garbage they produce.

“Using reusable bottles is an easy way for all of us to make a difference every single day. It conserves water, oil, energy and money and it reinforces the message that our water supply is safe and some of the best in the world.”

The class has convinced 90 per cent of school staff and students to use reusable water bottles at school, and last year it started the Blue W program, which lets people fill water bottles in participating stores.

Alls congratulated the group on its success.

“I’m so proud of you for the work that you do and your teacher … It’s a big goal, and I’m glad you’ve made it,” he said.
