Played out
It’s been quite a marathon for candidates across Wellington County. Some candidates have told us the campaign has been long and tiring.
In a few short days, results will be known and efforts rewarded. While one might believe the only reward is getting elected, we see it a little differently.
Every one of the almost 120 candidates running across the county (including those acclaimed) dared to put themselves out there. They participated publicly at numerous organized events, knocked on doors, offered a platform and answered questions when asked.
From this vantage point, the past few months suggests local democracy is alive and well in Wellington County. That deserves a thank-you to each and every candidate for taking the time and making the effort to give residents options.
We have been asked in recent days about whether this newspaper will be endorsing candidates. While some larger operations (more so stateside) engaged in that advice to voters, it was never practiced here, for a good reason.
We happen to have faith in people and value the solemn nature of the ballot where people exercise their right to vote. That may sound a bit sentimental, but that’s exactly as we see it. It is an occasion where every voter gets a chance to have their say. We hope many exercise that right.
There was a movement early in this election to encourage more voters to take advantage of this opportunity.
Bridget Ryan, a current Erin councillor who will not be running again, told us of her plan, and Centre Wellington mayoral candidate Bronwynne Wilton had a letter to the editor at the end of July encouraging a 50 per cent turnout this time around.
Poor turnouts remain a worrying trend. Is it because people aren’t interested, suffer from apathy or have concluded their voice doesn’t matter? Whatever the case, it is hoped the increase in candidate options increases voter interest this time around. People should be involved in choosing the leadership for arguably the most consequential level of government – the place where they live.
Monday will be a big night.
Thank you, candidates, for your effort.
