Vandals strike village again, cause $15,000 in damage to public school

A recent pattern of mischief continued here over the weekend, with vandals causing $15,000 in damage to Erin Public School.

On Aug. 20 Wellington County OPP officers were dispatched to the school after someone complained yelling and banging could be heard behind the Daniel Street building.

Police arrived to find multiple school windows broken, but no suspects were located in the area.

“No entry appeared to have been gained into the school,” police stated in a press release, which noted windows on all sides of the building – 15 in total – were smashed.

“Damage has been estimated at $15,000.”

The incident is one of several reports of mischief in recent weeks in the village of Erin, which earlier this month prompted residents to form an online community watch group.

“It’s ridiculous, it’s completely out of hand,” Tracey Wallace, an administrator of the “Erin Community Watch” Facebook group, told the Advertiser recently.

In an Aug. 11 open letter to Erin residents, Mayor Allan Alls said the vandalism reflects badly on the town.

He called on residents “to report crimes or suspicious activities to the OPP proactively, instead of merely referencing what took place afterwards on social media.”

Police are investigating the incident at the public school and are asking anyone with information to contact the Wellington County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
