Schools in the Upper Grand District School Board are heading to “the nationals.”

Groups from Guelph Colligate Vocational Institute and John F. Ross CVI have earned spots at the 44th annual MusicFest Canada National Competition.

This is the first time Ross has qualified for the national competition. They are bringing their junior wind ensemble.

GCVI is heading back to nationals for the sixth consecutive year. This year, all of the school’s ensembles qualified for the competition - 82 students participating in three different groups will compete.

MusicFest is a prestigious event that showcases outstanding musical ensembles from schools across the country.

The competition brings together thousands of students and educators from across Canada over a one-week period, to celebrate excellence in musical performance. The competition is hosted in a different city each year, providing an opportunity for students and teachers to meet and share their musical talents and creativity.

Other goals of MusicFest Canada are to evaluate musical achievements in a educationally-focused way, encourage the study of music by Canadian composers and foster a lifelong interest in music.

This year’s competition will be held from May 9 to 14 in Ottawa.
