United Way looks to make impact this fall

GUELPH – United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin kicked-off its 2019 fundraising campaign with a breakfast on Sept. 12 at the Royal City Church here.

The breakfast highlighted the work being done in the community around homelessness and mental health and addictions.

“Before retiring from the Guelph Police Service, I had the pleasure of working with Mayor (Cam) Guthrie and members of the Taskforce on Homelessness and Community Safety,” said Jeff DeRuyter, 2019 United Way campaign chair.

“It was incredible to see so many community partners come together on some very important issues impacting our community, and United Way was there right from the beginning to offer support.”

The kick-off included an update on the work of the Mayor’s Task Force.

United Way pledged $160,000 earlier this year, to two priorities: the Welcoming Streets program and the Supported Recovery Room.

The City of Guelph, Waterloo-Wellington LHIN, the County of Wellington and the Guelph Police Services Board have also confirmed funding.

United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin announced a 2019 campaign goal of $3.4 million, which funds more than 70 local programs in Guelph and Wellington and Dufferin counties.

The campaign runs until the end of December.

Donations are accepted at workplaces and through the United Way office (519-821-0571 or www.unitedwayguelph.com).
