Trade Tracks delivers ‘wow factor’
Fourth annual event introduces 2,000 local students to careers in trades
FERGUS – Officials say the fourth annual community showcase designed to encourage youth to enter the trades was a resounding success.
The Trade Tracks Showcase welcomed 2,000 students, in grades 6 to 12 and from 41 schools, to the grounds of the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex on May 22 and 23.
“It was a great event,” said Trade Tracks CEO Carl Gray.
“It did exactly what we were trying to do.”
The event aims to address a lack of people employed in and studying for skilled trades by focusing on engagement over information, allowing students to operate equipment, interact with professionals and gain a real understanding of the work.
It’s what Gray calls “the wow factor.”
He explained there was likely close to $50 million worth of equipment on display at the event, making it a popular draw with students.
The event also included educators with programs designed for those entering trades.
According to the 2026 EmployerOne Survey for Waterloo Wellington Dufferin, more than half of employers reported hard-to-fill positions, with the number one reason identified as a lack of applicants.
Meanwhile, 90 per cent of employers said they’re willing to train candidates who demonstrate interest and a strong fit within their organization.
Across Canada, labour market data shows hundreds of thousands of skilled trades workers will be needed over the next decade, driven by retirements, infrastructure demand and continued growth in construction, manufacturing, transportation and industrial sectors.
Gray said for employers, the event offers an opportunity to:
- connect with future workforce entrants;
- showcase their industry;
- contribute to rebuilding a sustainable talent pipeline; and
- address workforce challenges.
For students, it provides the opportunity to see, touch, and experience career pathways before making decisions that shape their future.
“It was huge,” Gray said of the first day of the event, noting the second day was partly washed out by rain.
“It was a great show ... with great exhibitors. And we’ll do it all again next year.”
