Township keeping busy with fun and much construction work

The construction schedule in Centre Wellington Township is so busy for the next two months that Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj told councillors she had maps and lists made for them so they know where projects are taking place and can explain the work to constituents who call.

Construction, though, is only a small part of the activities in the township.

Ross-Zuj noted that the In Motion campaign is now well underway. It began on Saturday morning when about 150 people did a 6km trailway walk from Elora Public School to the museum, and back on the south side of the river.

Recreation Director Andy Goldie said the free swimming Saturday afternoon attracted about 140 people, and another 75 took advantage of the free skating that was part of the kickoff for physical fitness.

Ross-Zuj thanked the five Olympic athletes who attended the trail walk, and said, “I’m sure it was the slowest walk they’ve ever done.”

Councillor Bob Foster said in an interview that he thanks the committee for all its hard work on the In Motion project.

Foster told council he is pleased that all the In Motion events were well attended.

Ross-Zuj said the Sensational Elora gala was superb, and so was the events for that festival at the Grand Theatre.

She also noted that M&M Meats did very well with its barbecue on Saturday to raise funds for breast cancer research.

As well, she said that 25 people attended the grand opening of the tennis courts at the Fergus Sportsplex, and she added that there are events going on in the community all this week.

Economic Development Officer Dave Rushton said that the Sensational Elora Gala raised $1,300 for the food bank, and made enough money to ensure the entire event will finish in the black.

There was a fitness fair at the Fergus community centre this Thursday, and the soup-off is on Thanksgiving Monday in Bissell Park.

“We hope to raise $10,000 for the food bank,” Rushton said.
