Tower Street bridge closing again for three weeks for repairs

Traffic through downtown Fergus could be tied up again with an expected three-week closure of the Tower Street bridge.

Signs have been posted informing residents and drivers of the bridge closure, which officials say will last from Sept. 8 to 26.

County project manager Mark Eby said the work will see asphalt resurfacing of the bridge and adjustments on manhole covers and joints.

Eby said when the bridge was replaced at the end of November, county officials and the construction company, McLean Taylor of St. Mary’s, knew there would be some final work to do on the structure and street.

“The surface asphalt is going to come off because it was put on for the winter,” Eby said of the temporary asphalt work done to re-open the bridge last year.

“There’s some odds and ends of things that couldn’t get done. Things we couldn’t do in November last year.”

Eby added the sidewalks will be reworked.

“The finish was not correct,” Eby said. “There’s odds and ends when you finish in November; you can’t always clean things up like you want to.”

County treasurer Ken DeHart said, “The total project costs were just under $4.2 million, (with) the net cost to the county at approximately $3.3 million after recoveries from Centre Wellington and third parties for their portion of the work.”

Eby said the additional work will not add to the cost of the project. He added the closure was discussed and endorsed by the downtown Business Improvement Association (BIA).

Eby hopes the work can be completed within three weeks.
