Sunshine List shows top earners in 2019

WELLINGTON COUNTY – While the world had its eyes on COVID-19 and the enormous upheaval to the social and economic system in Canada, the Ontario government recently released the Public Sector Salary Disclosure list for 2019.

Also called the “Sunshine List,” the province has been disclosing public sector salaries of more than $100,000 since 1996. Visit ontario.ca/salarydisclosure.

The top 2019 earners in Wellington County are:

– Bruce Laukner, CEO of the Waterloo-Wellington Local Health Integration Network, who made $349,840 in 2019 (up from 347,381 in 2018);

– Dr. Nicola Mercer, CEO and Chief Medical Officer of Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health, who earned $312,710 last year (up from $311,498 in 2018); and

– Scott Wilson, CAO of Wellington County, 267,668 (up from 261,937 in 2018);

There were 74 municipal employees on the list in 2019, up from 71 last year.

Wellington-Halton Hills MPP and speaker Ted Arnott earned $152,913 in 2019, up from $139,259 in 2019. Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece received $146,538 in 2019, which is up from 137,473 in 2018.

Education

There were 388 employees of the Upper Grand District School Board on the list in 2019, which is an increase from 344 in 2018. Martha Rogers, director of education, made the most at $233,288, which is down from her 2018 salary of $244,704.

Tamara Nugent, director of Wellington Catholic District School Board, was the top earner in 2019 at her board, at $211,935.36, up from $196,797 the year before.

Some 92 WCDSB employees were also on the list, a considerable drop from the 301 employees who made the list last year.

Health and Wellness

 Stephen Street, president and CEO for Groves Memorial Community Hospital and North Wellington Health Care Corporation, earned $228,882 last year (up from $225,438 in 2018) and 43 other hospitals workers also make the list. In 2018, 35 workers earned more than $100,000.

The Waterloo-Wellington LHIN has 36 employees on the list, down from 39.

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health had 17 employees on the list in 2019, the same as in 2018.

The Canadian Mental Health Association of Waterloo Wellington had 13 employees on the list in 2019; down from 16 the year before. Helen Fishburn, executive director, earned $174,762 in 2019.

Children’s Aid Society of the Guelph and Wellington has 21 people on the list in 2019, up from 16 the year before. Sheila Markle, executive director, earned $178,706, up from $163,908 in 2018.

Executive director Sly Castaldi is the only employee at Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis on the sunshine list. In 2019 she earned $108,147, up from $107,156 the year before.

Laura Hanley, executive director of Community Living Guelph Wellington earned $125,611 in 2019, down from $125,688 the year before.

Joan Nanlal, executive director at the Jon Howard Society of Waterloo-Wellington was top earner there at $114,857. In 2018 she made $114,170.

Police/EMS

The highest salary at the Wellington OPP detachment was for Sgt. Michael Ashley, who earned $176,958 in 2019 (up from $173,390). Detachment commander Inspector Scott Lawson earned $165,949 (now retired), up from $160,401.

Stephen Dewar, General Manager Guelph Wellington Paramedic Service, earned  $169,295 in 2019.
