Suicide awareness community barbecue to be held in Mount Forest on Sept. 14

It is estimated that 12 people will die by suicide today and every day in Canada, state officials from Healthy Opportunities Promoting Empowerment (HOPE).

“Countless other individuals will attempt to end their life or question its value,” they continue.

“The stories are heartbreaking. The ripple effects of suicide are broad. Family, friends and whole communities are impacted. People are left asking the question: ‘Why?’”

This year’s World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) theme is “Working Together to Prevent Suicide.”

On Sept. 10, the Suicide Awareness Council of Wellington Dufferin and the HOPE Committee for Wellington and North Minto invite everyone to find a way of connecting on WSPD.

“Our collective actions and words give a powerful voice to the difference each and every one of us, alone and together, can make in spreading the message that help, hope and healing are possible,” officials say.

The Suicide Awareness Council and the HOPE Committee are partnering to host a community barbecue on Sept. 14 from 11:30am  to 1:30pm at the M&M Food Market on Main Street in Mount Forest.

Everyone is invited to drop by and enjoy a hamburger or hotdog and a pop for a donation in support of the HOPE Committee.

This is a great opportunity to show support for mental health awareness and suicide prevention in the community, officials note. The event is another way the HOPE Committee “strives to create opportunities … to talk about mental health through community events, information sharing and advocating for services in Wellington North,” officials say.
