Students from six high schools immerse themselves in French culture and language

GUELPH – Upper Grand District School Board students enrolled in core French and French immersion classes spent four days immersing themselves in French culture and language.

From Feb. 10 to 13, students and staff enjoyed the UGDSB’s annual trip to the small town of St. Donat, Quebec.

This year, 37 students from Centennial CVI, Centre Wellington DHS, Erin DHS, Guelph CVI, Orangeville DSS and Wellington Heights SS took part in the trip.

Teacher chaperons were Christina Schilling, Teresa Katerberg, Stephanie Severn and Mason Reid.

For four days, the students were led in French by qualified “moniteurs,” engaging in activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skating on a 2km track through the woods and taking ski or snowboard lessons at nearby Mont Garceau. Along with the outdoor activities, students took part in a number of workshops, including music and percussion, ecology, a scavenger hunt and a talent show.

“The response to the trip continues to be extremely positive, with students and parents saying that the experience made students more confident in their abilities to speak and understand the French language,” officials say.

“The trip has also been a great way for students in different schools to build friendships.”
