Street names in Palmerston will honour two local veterans

Councillors here will recognize local veterans and families with two new street names in Palmerston.

On July 2, council approved Noble Road as the name of a new street in the Palmerston industrial park. The Noble name was offered for the road  because it represents local veterans and the name of nearby residents.

Mayor David Anderson said  the name has been in Palmerston for some time.

Clerk Barb Wilson said the name is also on the list of suggested names from the local branch of the Royal Canadian  Legion. Two veterans by the same last name are on the list. The name also represents the owners of the property to the west of the industrial park.

Anderson considered the name both fitting and suitable.

Shortly after, council approved Milton Seiler Street as the name for the new street to be created in a development along Toronto Street in Palmerston.

Wilson noted that the name of the First World War veteran was recommended by the Palmerston Legion.

The choice council faced was to name the street with only the surname – or the whole name. Councillor Rick Hembly’s motion to use the whole name was seconded by councillor Wayne Martin.

The only concern raised was by Deputy-Mayor Judy Dirksen, who asked if council should rename one street with a surname and one with a whole name. Although council’s policy is to name new streets after local veterans, Wilson said nothing specifies which format council can choose.

Hembly said his theory is there was more than one Noble veteran and it also represents the Noble family. To council’s knowledge there is only one Seiler veteran.

Martin added that the Palmerston Legion wanted to recognize a veteran from the First World War.

“In this case it might be wise to use the whole name because it may not be a familiar name to current residents.”
