Stand United in Minto gathering celebrates diversity

HARRISTON  – The Town of Minto and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee welcome all to join them for an evening of celebration and to stand united against hate and discrimination on June 28, from 6:30 to 8:30pm.

Organizers of the celebration, dubbed Stand United in Minto, invite everyone to show support “for our beautiful and diverse community.”

The community is encouraged to gather at the Harriston-Minto Community Centre Pavilion (111 George St. S., Harriston) to listen to speakers, participate in activities, and enjoy refreshments.

A land acknowledgement and smudging ceremony will begin at 6:30pm, followed by story sharing about the Hijab, a plaque unveiling and dances. A Harriston resident and member of the Syrian community will lead the community in a traditional dance, and afterwards all are welcome to watch  an Afro-Tribal dance performance. The event will conclude with free time and refreshments.

Community members can draw with chalk, visit various community groups at their tables, enjoy music, and chat with their fellow neighbours.  Attendees are also encouraged to make commitments that will anonymously feature in a “community weave” art project.

Everyone is asked to bring their own water bottle to reduce waste. Water bottle refilling stations will be available.

The event is free to attend, but donations to future solidarity events will be accepted.
