Spirit in the Hills boosts food bank

On  Aug. 16, from 10am to 2pm at Hillsburgh’s family fun day, Spirit in the Hills, the East Wellington Community Services van, will be parked on the main street to collect non-perishable food donations for the Food Bank.

The goal is to stuff the van.

“We want to see just how full the bus will be at the end … there is a lot of room to fill and I hope that our community will fill every square inch of the bus with food,” said EWCS care coordinator Alyssa Cunningham.

Items ideas include: Kraft Dinner, baked beans, canned meats, school snacks, pasta, cereal, jam, peanut butter, coffee, tea and hygiene products.

A complete list of the food banks most urgent needs can be found on the EWCS website.

Staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about senior transportation services and adult day programs.

“With so many people aged 60 and over living in a rural area, access to reliable transportation to medical appointments, the grocery store or the bank can be a real challenge. Our transportation service fulfills this need, but there is a cost for the ride being provided,” said EWCS senior services manager Sherri Plourde.

Angela Mathers will also be on hand with upcoming information on all of the children’s programs offered.

For the children, there will be a bouncy castle and farm-themed games such as sheep herding, cow-pie fly, chicken limbo, and bowling.

Hillsburgh arena staff will also be hosting a Main Street marketplace showcasing local businesses and goods.

Proceeds from vendor booth registrations are being donated to the Food Bank with EWCS.

To participate as a vendor, call 519-855-4417.

At the Hillsburgh library, there will be a petting zoo on the front lawn and inside everyone will be able to learn about dairy farming from Nancy Harper, an educator with Dairy Farmers of Ontario.

The classic car show will return with the addition of antique tractors this year.

In the Hillsburgh Historical Park, the local 4-H Art Club will present Art in the Park, displaying a variety of artwork that the members have been creating during the summer months.

On the street, vendors will be selling candy, chocolate, tea and jewelry. At the Guelph Storm’s Top Shot Hockey Challenge tent, young and old will be able to fire their hardest shots at the net. Pockets the clown will be creating balloon animals for the youngsters and Kent Tocher will provide musical entertainment.

At 11:30am, members of the International Taoist Tai Chi Centre will demonstrate the 5,000-year-old practice of Tai Chi. At 1pm the celebrity challenge will take place. The participants – current and aspiring politicians, along with community leaders – will use their creativity, problem solving abilities and knowledge of animal anatomy to complete the challenge involving barnyard critters.

Drop by the Lets Get Hillsburgh Growing committee’s booth to order fall decorating kits and bid on silent auction items. Funds raised will go towards new entrance signs for the village of Hillsburgh.

Spirit in the Hills is coordinated through the Let’s Get Hillsburgh Growing (LGHG) committee who have been in operation since in 2005.

This committee is responsible to the beautification and revitalization of Trafalgar Road in Hillsburgh and its members are volunteer citizens and representatives from businesses and community groups within Hillsburgh.
