Specialist program extended to two Wellington County schools

The provincial government  is expanding specialist high skills major programs across Ontario.

Starting in September, six high schools in Guelph and Wellington County will offer 15 additional specialist high skills major programs, including Centre Wellington District High School and Erin District High School.

“The … program is a favourite of the students I meet in our high schools,” said Minister of Education Leona Dombrowsky.

“Getting experience in a range of fields helps young people discover their talents and possible career options while earning credits to graduate.”

Centre Wellington District High School will offer programs in construction, environment, hospitality and tourism, and manufacturing. Erin High School will offer Sports and hospitality and tourism.

Through those programs, students earn credits while developing skills needed for college, university, apprenticeship, or the workplace.

In 2011-12, there will be over 1,300 specialist high skills majors programs in 600 high schools in Ontario – an increase from 1,000 in 540 schools.

More than 34,000 students will be enrolled in the program across Ontario in 2011-12 – an increase of 6,000 students over this school year.
