Scrappin event will help woman suffering with ALS

A group of family and friends will hold  a 15 hour scrapbooking day here on Oct. 22 at the Best Western Hotel.

The event is for a cause. The group is trying to make life easier for Susan Aasman, 65, who will celebrate a birthday in October.

She and her husband John are currently living in Mitchell, and she is suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Her friends noted Aasman has been a lady of great community involvement and unfortunately has had to give up some of her roles that she has truly enjoyed. She was diagnosed in April and her disease has progressed that now the family is considering moving into the Fergus area, closer to her family.

Family and friends are putting on the Scrappin for Susan event, so it is being held in Guelph at the Best Western hotel and Conference centre.

ALS is a rapidly progressive and ultimately fatal neuromuscular disorder. People with ALS lose control of their muscles, which makes breathing, eating and smiling impossible. Average equipment costs are $145,000 over the course of the disease, and most of those costs are not covered by government or private insurance.

The event runs from 9am to midnight at 716 Gordon St.

The cost is $50 for scrapbooking and for $68 supper will also be provided. Lunch is available in the restaurant, and beverages and snacks will be available throughout the day.

Consultants will be on site for shopping convenience, and there will be door prizes, a penny sale, 50:50 draw and more events through the day.
