Reduced voting hours in municipal election at institutions

There will be reduced hours for voting in the upcoming municipal elections at institutions and retirement homes in Centre Wellington.

Councillors endorsed a staff report which recommended that it authorize the mayor and clerk to execute a bylaw to provide for reduced hours of voting in institutions and retirement homes in accordance with Section 46(3) of the Municipal Elections Act for the 2014.

In accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, “On voting day, a voting place shall be provided on the premises of the following:

a) An institution for the reception, treatment or vocational training of members or former members of the Canadian Forces;

b) An institution in which, on nomination day, 20 or more beds are occupied by persons who are disabled, chronically ill or infirm;

c) A retirement home in which, on nomination day, 50 or more beds are occupied.”

In addition, the Act allows municipalities to provide for reduced hours of voting in institutions and retirement homes.

According to staff, initial contact has been made with the following institutions and retirement homes: Caressant Care, Groves Memorial Community Hospital, Heritage River Retirement Residence, Highland Manor Retirement Lodge and Wellington Terrace to arrange, to allow and/or assist the residents to vote within a shorter time frame.
